Question:

How can I improve my AM radio reception in a building?

I just got relocated to another workcenter & the AM station I listened to is now drowned out by static & buzz from all the florescent lights. Is there a radio that can cut through the noise & pull in the station? I don't want to pay a monthly fee for satellite. Thanks for any input.

  1. This is going to sound weird, but it may work. Without knowing what kind of radio you have, we'll have to improvise. Of course, I'm assuming the station you want to listen to doesn't stream or you're not allowed to stream on the company computer - 'cause that's the easiest answer. Especially if you want to listen to a syndicated show like Rush Limbaugh who will be available on many station streams.

If there's a window nearby (and you can open it), you could run a long piece of wire from your radio out the window. If it is sealed, tape the wire to the window about half way up.

If there is an antenna on your radio, wrap the wire around the antenna. There might also be a small set-s***w on the back of your set. Try attaching the wire to the set-s***w and see what happens (it may just be for FM). If there is no set-s***w, nor any other antenna, you could wrap the wire around the radio itself. Anything like this will act as an antenna - not ideal, but you never know.

If this doesn't work, and you want to invest some money check the AM antenna boosters at www.selectatenna.com

But make sure it can be returned if it doesn't solve your problem. Interference from lighting is one of the toughest problems to overcome - especially when deep inside a concrete and steel bldg. Good luck!

  2. Unless you turn off the lights and get away from concrete.  The station has to be strong enough to get through the interference.  Nothing will help you pull a station in through interference but moving the radio around to a position that helps the most, usually in a place that's the most inconvenient for you.

  3. First option for you as per my opinion is -

If possible use a long wire external antenna.  And feed with good quality coaxal wire to the radio antenna jack.

Another option is use a AM loop antenna with your radio.  There are many AM loop antennas are available over internet.  So that you can use that loop antenna within your room or any corner of you residence.  Please search on internet at http://www.ebay.com or someother places.

  4. I guess you will have to find a website of a radio station in which you can listen through your computer.

I listen to talk radio all day long on the computer
