Question:

How can I improve my overhand serve?

I am a relatively good volleyball player. I was on the middleish level team last year. I have a pretty nice overhand serve, but I'd really like to make it little more powerful and precise. Any tips on placing the ball while still having controlled power?

Thanks

  1. well if u want a reeeely good serve try a jump serve.... its when u throw the ball up realy high with the same hand ur gonna hit it wif and start doin somthin like a aproach and then hit the ball in the air.... this will make it go realy high over the net and go to the back row.... make sure u make ur hand go all the way around

  2. Point your foot where you want the ball to go, also follow through with your serve. Whether it's taking a step, swinging all the way through, pointing where you want the ball to go or whatever else feels comfortable for you. That has helped me place my serves where I want them. Also, to get a more powerful serve make sure your working your arms out on a regular basis with something other than volleyball. Buy some 5 lb. dumb bells and start doing some excercises at home. Also when you serving make sure you have your "lonely" hand up there with your serving hand. Almost like your hitting, that will give you more power and control.

  3. 1. start sideways

    2. toss, step, & THEN spike

  4. An easy way to place the ball where you want (while still having control) is to have your hand end where you want the ball to go. you just serve regularly but face your hand where you would like the ball to go. be sure to follow through for your power..Good Luck!

  5. u want to make sure that your arm is is fully straight and a little higher above your head when u make contact with the ball. that will give it some more power. i was told to also cup your hand slightly. as in to cup water in your hand. u can also try the jump serve. but that is a little tough to master. thats about all i can think of. hope this helped!

  6. make sure u start sideways so when u make contact you use your whole body for more power

  7. it's all about the toss, and contact.

pretend like your going to serve the ball, but do not hit it. if you toss it correctly it should bounce off you head, in front of you.

that's how the olympic players toss the ball. just a little behind them.

what my volleyball coach makes us do for serving practice is, he gets two aerobic steps and places them one on top of the other. you stand on the box and serve balls. it helps tremendously and tells you if you throw the ball to the left, right, behind, or in front of you because you will be off balance and fall of the boxes in that direction

  8. if you get stronger and just work on that pacifically a lot then it should then it should get more powerful

  9. Make sure your hand is open and as wide as it can be, this will allow you to place it easily and the contact will make it a more powerful serve

  10. haha okay serving is a very tough thing to do, and it took me FOREVER to finally be able to do it the "right way" , so i definatly know where your coming from....here are some tips that i actually found extremely important and useful while learning how to get it over and just plain serve well.............

NEVER stand straight facing the court, angle yourself 45 degrees to the right

NEVER put extra steps into your serve, just step and drag, thats it

ALWAYS keep you hips, shoulder, arm, and hand OPEN!!!

NEVER try to just hit it as hard as you can, take time on checking your form, opening up and swinging through the ball

ALWAYS try to think about what your doing and where you want the ball to go

ALWAYS be positive and tell yourself "i can do it"

ALWAYS ask yourself "what went wrong" if you miss a serve or it does not go where you want it to go

***hope i helped and good luck with the serving!!!
