Question:

How can I improve my overhand volleyball serve?

I’m on my high school girls jv volleyball team, but the problem is I can‘t serve overhand. I always try as hard as I can, do all the steps, and practice, but I still can’t get it over. I’m 5 2” and weigh 97 lbs so I guess I’m pretty small. When I serve, the height of the ball I guess is fine but it just needs to go maybe like 3 feet farther and it will get over. And were not allowed to punch it or use our wrist. We can serve underhand, but our coach doesn’t want us to because it makes it easier for the other team to get the ball. So are there any ways I can get better? Any tips or ideas? Thanks =] <3

  1. U may start practicing overhead serve from 3m line, then move back to 6m then to 9m line and beyond.. U must have your certain target where u want to put the ball.. do it severel times until u feel comfortable with it and gain your confidence.. and try to make use your wrist while serving because this will affects the ball movement... try targeting the ball below 1m on the net... And most importantly, lots of practice...

  2. I love volleyball and was named the MVP overhand server of my league! Ok, first just think of overhand serving like hitting a teather ball, except more higher. Then, practice by serving it against a wall making sure you get height. So, after you practice with a teatherball and a wall serve, from the side line try just to make it over the net, even if it goes out of bounce. Then, thats when you should try to get it over in bounce and hitting it with more force....good luck!! :]

  3. open up your shoulder then focus all of your anger or concentrate on getting it over then swing hard! or you can try taking a couple of steps into it to build up momentum

  4. practice, practice, practice. i worked over 80 hours this summer to perfect my overhand, and now i can jump serve.

the only thing i can tell you is to maybe get some private lessons with the varsity coach, or even with your own coach. you could maybe find someone around your town who could help you.

    good luck!

  5. if i were you, i would find a wall in the gym or even hit it against your house. make sure to keep your arm up and try to hit it with the palm of your hand as hard as you can. another good thing you can do is to hit it on the ground against the wall so that it pops right back up to you perfectly. that helps to get the ball to hit the right part of your hand, making you hit that part every time. a girl on my vball team had the same problem as you. my coach realized that she wasn't swinging through. make sure that your arm goes all the way down past your leg when you hit it. that adds a ton more force. hope i helped-sorry it was so long

  6. In USYVL we teach players to start at the 10-ft line and make ten good serves. You then move back 5-ft after every ten good serves till you reach the end line.

Keep practicing you will get the feel and more importantly your confidence. You should get there within one week if you practice your serving everyday... our ten-year-old can get there within two practice, but they are not quite consistent (you should be able to serve much better in jv).

  7. It sounds like you just don't have the strength to get it over. If you work hard, you can develop a very good knuckling serve underhand.

  8. Well It might be because you are shorter but not a problem...

Well if you have a open area at home or a wall of some kind you can hit against then us that for these steps..

1.Get a Good Toss.Make sure it doesnt go behind you.

2.Get your Hand in a Open Position.

3.Hit the Ball in the Palm of Your Hand.

4.IMPORTANTT. Make Sure You STOP your hand from going all the way through and it doesnt go past your shoulder!.

If you dont hanve a wall then go to a local gym or your school and ask to practice!
