How can I improve my running?

I go into the marine corps on sept 8th 2008 so I need to get in the best running shape of my life. I bought a pair of Nike+ shoes with the ipod adapter to track my running to show my improvement but other then what this program can offer me how can I improve my running? What legal suplliments can I take? What should I eat? What should I not eat? I ran today for the first time in half a year and I ran 1.23 miles in 9min 37 sec before having to stop. After that I pushed myself between running and walking for a little over a mile over the course of 12min and 30sec. I really want to get myself as prepared as possible physically. I am 18 years old and weigh 150lb. any and all tips are highly appreciated. if any more information is needed just ask. Thanks in advance

  1. 1.23 miles in 9 min 37 sec isn't that bad.

    drink lots of water, but not before running. a good thing to do is take the water in your mouth, swish it around a bit, and spit it out. it helps keep you hydrated, and you won't have the water bouncing around in your tummy when you run, lol

    eat healthy (protein and veggies). stay away from junk food. etc. the usual, obvious stuff.
