Question:

How can I increase my car's acceleration???

I have a 1998 mitsubishi mirage de that has a 92hp 1.5 liter engine 4 speed automatic. The car is great except for one thing, the engine has no "get up" or acceleration and I want to increase this by even a small margin and relatively cheap. Would a more expensive K & N air filter help or what are some other quick and easy options for a beginner?

  1. any modifications you do to the overall composition can but won't always improve the acceleration, but what you really need is more horse power or less weight. A different transmission system might increase acceleration, but so can switching to a stick. These are expensive options. The cheapest way to really improve acceleration is by removing unnecessary components and reducing the overall weight.

changing your fuel octane, getting an oil change, getting higher quality oil, or even checking the spark plugs might improve your car's performance.

Still, removing non essential parts (stuff in the trunk, cushions, etc.) and buying lighter components are the only real ways to improve acceleration without changing the motor or transmission.

  2. Make sure the air filter is clean - price is not an issue.

Pour in a bottle of fuel injector/carberator cleaner (like Gummout, STP, etc) in your gas tank.

Next time you fill up, put in a tank of premium grade gasoline.

Check the air pressure in your tires and inflate them 3-5 psi higher than what the manual calls for.

    Replace the spark plugs.

    Use synthetic oil, 5W30.

  3. the truth is that its a very small engine. a 1.5 liter isnt that much at all.

if your doing it for performance i would suggest to just get something with more potential, otherwise youll end up wasting lots of time and money for results not that great, and in the end be very pissed off.

but if your looking to increase acceleration for other reasons, you could start with a cold air intake, that would do a lil bit but dont expect huge results from that, next throw headers on it, this would allow you car to "breath" a lot easier. other than that i wouldnt recomend much else. if you insisted you could change your gear box. its kinda costly but it is an alternative

  4. I use to have a beat up automatic 96 Nissan 240sx, it was my joy ride until it was wrecked by an accident (wasn't my fault).  Easy ways to tune up your to increase the horsepower would be small things, get like a straight exhaust pipe for your car, I also recommend a silencer on the tip because it'll be loud, this will help air come out faster and won't push you back.   You can also get an air intake "kit" installed, K & N is great, I use to have this air filter in my car.  You can also get headers but thats a little pricey, I don't know much about your car but it'll probably cost you a couple of hundreds for one, plus installation.   Hope this helps!

  5. Turbocharger??

  6. Do you have gears? Do you have money.

If u have gears get up to the highest gear waist a bit of fuel refill it not half put it full and then go you will increase alot of speed. It drains fast so becareful.

  7. Cold air intake would help out a lil, Try to put a bottle of Fuel injector cleaner in your tank you can get some of your acceleration back works for me.
