also, if you could dumb the answer down a bit as i'm not too good with computers

thank you for any help =)

  1. turn off torrents then go to dslreports and do /tools  speedtest  then run tweaktest to check 'RWIN' setting [data recieve window]

if it off they have Drtcp utility to set it, then reboot.

get a new copy of uTorrent and install

    follow this guide

    http://www.utorrent.com/setup_guide.php

    i also run 'Bittorrent' too.

  2. First the obvious: Are there enough peers? Sometimes, even if you are connected to many peers, you will notice that they have poor connections. uTorrent uses reverse DNS, so you can see who the ISP of the peers are. Take a look and see if the peers have ISPs that you know to be slow.

Second the somewhat obvious: Ports forwarded correctly? If not, have a look at http://www.portforward.com/

This site has a list of guides organized by firewall or router for opening ports. They even have guides for uTorrent in particular.

Third, are you downloading through DHT only? If this is the case, there is nothing you can do about it except try to find another torrent of the file you are downloading that has some actual peers

Fourth, limit your upload speed a bit. If you limit your upload speed to around 80 percent of your maximum upload speed, you will be able to download at full capacity.  If you have SDSL you can disregard this.

Fifth, if the torrent is using multiple trackers, check to make sure that none of them are private. If the torrent uses 15 trackers, and 5 are private, that's fine - just as long as most of them are public, you will be alright.

Sixth, this is extremely unlikely, but make sure that the tracker has not banned your client.  Since you said you are using uTorrent, I highly doubt this, since most admins will actually encourage users to use either uTorrent or Azureus (to steer them away from leecher clients). On the other hand, if you are using a leecher client or otherwise modified version of uTorrent, some legitimate clients will refuse to communicate with you. Please ensure that the peer_id of your client does not appear with [FAKE] as a prefix.  If you downloaded your copy of uTorrent from http://www.utorrent.com/, you do not have to worry about this.

  3. This is a pretty clear guide for getting good download speed in uTorrent
