How can I inform my wife I've lost £300,000 playing online poker?

Curse and blast it, I got a little carried away, and lost over a quarter million.

My wife will be terribly annoyed at this. Financially of course, it's a drop in the ocean as my fortune is vast but all the same, she is against gambling on the whole and I imagine a few uncomfortable nights in one of the guest suites at best.

Why should you tell the wife?  All she would have spent it on would have been perfume and clothes, probably.

you really need help.

one of my friends dads lost their house through gambling, and the mother took her husband to court for it, while filing for a divorce. he became homeless, and who knows where he is now. as for my friend and her mum, they have just purchased another house, and are doing fine. this is because the mother is not tempted to gamble at all.

My dear boy a gentleman's gambling debts are nobodies business but his own. I remember once losing my first wife in a game of poker to Shake Marumaba and I never told her, I simply said I was sending her on an all expenses paid holiday for being such a super wifey, that was 12 years ago now and I haven't heard a dickey bird from her since although I did bump into the shake at Harrods around Christmas time, he said she hates it there in Dubai. Yikes.  Tricky one.  Well if it really is just a drop in the ocean in terms of your fortune, perhaps things are best left untold.  Or however, if it's like she'll inevitably find out somehow, best wait til she's in a good mood, sit her down and break it to her gently, reassuring her that you're financially safe regardless of how much you lost and let her know that what you did was silly (no offence).  

Don't play any more poker or anything for a while.
