How can I introduce my new kittens to my dog?

I just got two new kittens and they are VERY small. Small enough to fit in your hand. My dog will be 1year old in October, and he is sweet but very hyper. I let him in to the room where the kittens were, and at first he sniffed them and licked them (a little roughly but not too bad--but it made them tumble over as he was nudging them) and then he seemed ok and started sniffing the rest of the room. A few minutes later I let him in the room again-- and this time he was much more aggressive-- Underestimating his size against theirs and pawing them to hard. I dont think he meant to hurt them but I am afraid that they will not be safe until they get bigger-- but I am also afraid that if I keep them away from him until then- they might never get along. HELP!!! I just want all the pets to be a happy family.

  1. You didn't mention how big your dog is. He will probably think they are cute toys and play way too ruff. When I was very little I had a large dog, part german shepherd, and he liked my kitten a lot. He licked her all the time and left her sleep beside her. Then one morning I got up for school I saw my kitty laying sort of funny outside.

When I got to her she was already dead. She had a broken neck and was all wet from him l*****g her. He must have picked her up and shook her to death. Don't trust them alone, ever.  Crate one or the other, when you are not there.

It is always better safe than sorry. I hope they eventually become good friends. Most animals that live together usually do. Good luck.

  2. try putting a baby gate between the doorway that way the kittens can see the dog and get use to him and the dog can interact with the kittens without hurting them or roughing them up to much. every once in awhile you can have your dog in the room with them but under your supervision that way if the dog gets to rough or excited you can correct his behavior and remove him from the situation. Eventually they'll all be one happy family and your kittens will hold their own against your dog but for now a mild level of separation is okay
