How can I jump higher for blocking?

I am a freshman this year and 4'10 3/4"

I am kind of like a utility player

I am the back up libero, outside hitter, and opposite of setter(idk what you call it)

when I play opposite setter, at one point i am in right front. so the coach has me set the first ball, then after it goes over and the other team gets ready to hit, i am in a blocking position so I at least have to attempt a block. I can barely reach the top of the net. I really want to be able to jump higher.

any tips?

  1. a jump rope helped me jump  4" higher it could help you some

  2. When blocking, bend your knees deeper and swing your arms harder would help you jump higher.

Based on your descriptions you are not old enough to do weights.

Wall-sit and some jumping in the sand would help. Swing hard and try reach your ceiling when at home is fun.

    Enjoy your games.

  3. Well.. im about the same height as you .. but im a sophmore in high school.. but like when you go to jump if your right handed step forward with your right foot first then your left really really low to the ground and your palms pointin up then jump as high as you can that should help the lower you get ... so my coach says.. im not really a spiker but i have to do all the spikers workouts and stuff durning workouts and stuff so yea .. but also some girls on varsity gained like 6 or 7 in on there jumps by using these jump soles .. you could prolly find them in like sports athority or somewhere and follow the instuction things !!!

  4. There are excercises you can do that will make you jump higher.  I'm not even going to go into that, because...

Youre under five feet tall, volleyball should not be your sport of choice.  I'm under six feet and white and therefore basketball (although fun to play and I enjoy it) is not a career option for me.

I know that when we're young people fill our heads with all that, "You can do anything you set your mind to" c**p, but as painful as it can be to accept, some of us just weren't meant to do some things.  You aren't meant to block a volleball net.  Accept this fact and you can then be free to focus on what you CAN do (I'm sure the list would be pages and pages).

In the meantime and if you're set on jumping higher, squats, leg presses, anything that will build your leg strength.  You're looking for high-weight, low-reps.  You want explosive power, not the kind of long-lasting strength you get from running or that kind of thing.

  5. A great way to be able to jump higher is to do squats and leg exercises to stretch your muscles.

And try jumping up against a wall and hitting the highest point and make a goal point on that wall of where you want to get at.

It'll help a lot. I know it sounds kind of stupid and the whole 'I'm jumping up against a wall  It will make me look ridiculous.'  Don't worry about that.  It will honestly help you in the end.

Yeah, I have to edit this right quick and say that the above thing about you not being tall enough.  Ignore that.  You can be the smallest person in the world and do the most tall of sports.

Don't let someone like him tell you you're not going to be good at something just because of your height.

    Good luck!

  6. You mentioned working out in the sand.  That is a good idea.  I also recommend working out in the pool.  Get about chest deep in the water.  Crouch down and jump as high as you can.  Repeat about 10 times as quickly as you can.  Take a 1 minute break.  Do another set of 10.  Try to do about 10 sets of 10.  Or more if you can.  The water will act as resistance to help you increase your workout.  It will also cushion your landing.  It will help your knees and ankles.
