  1. If you came to America as a Vietnamese citizen and got American citizenship how would anyone know if you didn't renounce your Vietnamese citizenship? I don't think that these Two governments share information on citizenship with each other.

    Regards,

  2. You can not.  If your lucky enough to become an American citizen you are pleging Alegence to this country and swear an oath to denounce your previous citizenship.

  3. As to your Vietnamese citizenship, I can't say what Vietnam allows or requires. You will have to see if someone here knows or if you can find information from the Vietnamese government.

As to the US I can briefly summarize the situation  and I'll link you to an excellent web site that covers dual citizenship and US laws very well.  I myself am a dual US/Irish Citizen and have looked into this carefully.

If you are a US citizen, you can keep that citizenship and keep or acquire a foreign citizenship in almost all cases.

About the only way to lose your citizenship is to go to a US consulate or embassy and complete and sign a renunciation form in the presence of a consular official.

The US courts have held that taking an oath of allegiance to another country, even one that renounces other citizenships, does NOT fulfill the requirement for renouncing your citizenship. The only way to lose US citizenship is to intentionally renounce that citizenship, which means you must say you renounces it AND intend to actually renouce it.

The US naturalizatiton process includes such an oath and the Supreme Court has ruled that the oath does not prevent you from having, keeping, acquiring, or reacquiring another citizenship.
