How can I keep bats (flying mammals) away from areas I do not want them (ie. my folded down patio umbrella)?

hang a couple mesh bags with mothballs in them inside your umbrella in the evening . in a few days the bats should be gone .the mothballs are not harmful to the bats. bats like most people don't like the smell of mothballs.

That's an easy fix.  Buy or make a bat box.  Ever heard of one?  If you fairly handy they are easy to make.  You will need a pole to place it on.  Google bat boxes.
