How can I keep my Basset Hound Puppy From Crying/Barking/Howling in the Crate?

She is 2 or 3 weeks, and she will not stop. She's in complete darkness, and she just yelps and yelps. We got her 3 days ago. Is it just because she is'nt used to it yet? Will the crying eventually stop? The crate isn't gonna be permanently used, we're just using it until she is trained.

  1. she misses her mother and is confused where she is and how she ended up with you the owner it needs its mother longer

  2. TWO OR THREE WEEKS???

You shouldn't have the puppy away from her mother till atleast 6 weeks (seven weeks is better!).

My puppy cried and howled during the first couple weeks of being in the crate at night. You have to ignore them and let them get used to it.

  3. alright,i was just refreshed with this issue and i know a lot about it.when the puppy is crying, make a loud noise(i.e-a long bang, hitting a pan)when the puppy stops for a few moments, praise her and pet her but don't take her out,and i agree, don't let her out when she's crying or she'll get the wrong idea!

  4. because its just a baby and doesn't understand where it is.  A puppy needs constant anttention and bonding.  I think its mean that you make him sleep in a crate.  My new puppy would be sleeping in bed with me.

  5. If you open the crate while she is crying then she will assume that crying gets you to open the crate.  Unfortunately the only cure is to wait her out and then 5 minutes after she's quiet you can let her out.  If you have let her out in the past while she was noisy, then you will have a harder time of it (it worked once, she will assume it will work again, and maybe she just has to be louder or do it longer.)

If you don't open the crate or pay attention to her in the crate while she's noisy... you will eventually have her grow out of it.  If you look at, talk to, or do anything towards the crate while she's making noise... then she never will grow out of it.

Add:  I kind of assumed you did, since a 2-3 week old pup wouldn't be much really... Figured you meant 2-3 months.

Just have that patience like I said.  Don't pay attention to her in the crate unless she's quiet then help her out.  Every puppy goes through a crying stage like this.  Just make sure to take her out regularly, it's much harder to potty train a pup who's going in the crate.

  6. We got our Nelson when he was 7 weeks.  He slept with me and I took him our at night and said, "Pee Nelson." and he did...I kept taking him our during the night and he always peed.  I am sorry, I don't know why she is peeing in the bed.  You need other answers.  Personally, I don't believe in crates.  I know people use them....I treat my pups like I like to be treated.  I don't want to be in a crate.  Nelson is 5....his "sister" is a Boston Terrier, she is 5 also.  They have never gone in the house or in our car (go out everyday), or in our Motor Home.  I wish I could give you the answers, I can't.  I guess ours were just easy.  Best of luck to you and your Baby.  Bassets are the BEST.....cheers.
