  1. Nasty divorce...

  2. Cool and/or Cold are probably relative to your tolerance level. Have you a window?

$1000 is a large amount of dollars when considering AC for a single room. Portables are available,  window units startin at approx  5000 BTU's can probably be purchased for less than $200,,, But you want alternatives?

What might you consider would allow a comfort level you could tolerate? I feel uncomfortably cold if inactive, in a room at a temp of 78. That's just me, and I love the heat.

I cannot imagine you getting an answer that will offer any viable alternatives to those things you don't want, that might COOL YOU enough.

  3. buy some battery operated fans, lol

  4. open the windows

  5. You can buy a 5000 BTU window ac unit at wal-mart for 100.00. The remaining 900.00 will be far more than enough to pay the difference added onto the electric bill for 2 years.

  6. It makes the room awefully dark, but tinfoil on the windows works wonders.

  7. Heat rises.

So just shimmy around on the floor, kinda like a worm,

  8. Place a fan in your window and turn it on all night long to pull in cool air, then in the morning close the window and the bedroom door to keep the cool air inside your room as long as possible. Repeat this procedure every night.

  9. If the relative humidity is fairly low (under 20%) then a portable "swamp" cooler will work. Otherwise the only thing that can be done is to insulate your attic area and replace single glazed windows with energy efficient ones. Most heat loss/gain is through the roof and windows.

  10. a ceiling fan on low won't use a lot of power, and will make it feel a lot cooler.  also use a few lights as possible, since they will generate heat.  if you have large animals that give off a lot of body heat, keep them out.  if possible expose hardwood floors.  keep shades down, and maybe plant a already big tree outside to cast a shadow on that end of the house.
