Question:

How can I keep new growth from falling out?

Ok, so I got my hair braided today, and I plan to keep these braids in about a month and a half to two months. But when I take them out I don't want my hair to shed really bad or the new growth to fall out. So should I do a hot oil treatment, then wash it out, then deep condition it. Or just deep condition it?

  1. If the braids are tight or like micros, you can expect some shedding. The hair that's attached to your natural hair is much heavier. If you used synthetic hair, your natural hair is braided in with it, so they end up intertwining, so again, expect some shedding.

When you get ready to take them out you should have a rat tail comb, a wide toothed comb, and a spray bottle. You mix a bit of regular conditioner with water in the bottle and shake it up. As you start each braid spray the braid with the conditioner just enough to make it moist. Then you work each braid out, a little at a time. They should begin to unravel. When you get to the top of the braid you may have knots. Moisten that area if it needs it, and comb out the knots very gently. This should make it easier.

  2. I'm not an expert on braids but I do know that with any styling the key is good hair maintenance. You should wash your hair at least every two weeks, and if you have a dry scalp then yes you may benefit from a hot oil treatment. I also recommend placing a leave in conditioner in your hair two times a week to keep it in good shape. Good Luck.
