How can I keep young people from throwing away their lives? ?

Or do they just have to figure it out themselves like I did. Basically figure it out the hard way and ignore adults who gave wisdoms in the past.

You have to really show them that there is something out there to live for. A few years ago I was in the same boat young, stupid and only worrying about the short term present satisfaction of life. Now I am 19 with a felony conviction and just realizing that my lifetime dream is to be a doctor. If someone had really let me know that there are attainable goals out there for everyone even me I really think I would have thought twice. Its only when you really show someone of any age that its either the good life or the bad life that they start understanding. You should go to high schools or even middle schools bringing information about things that they can do. Different things to. Not just the regular basketball or football. Something fun exciting and something that they can make money doing. And always remember when trying to show them the different careers in life always make sure that the careers are attainable not some far fetched career that they might not be able to get. Um, is that a question that you will accept an answer for?  Kids, like any people, can figure out things the way that most people do - from personal experience, their's por others'.

There are a lot of Voluntary groups out there that would be willing to train you as a Counsellor

Well it doesn't hurt to explain to them and try to help them, but I think many young people think they know everything (like I did) and won't hear what you are trying to say to them.

Many of them will go out and make mistakes, unfortunately some will make costly mistakes. All you can do is hope they did hear you and at least you know you tried to help that person from doing something stupid.

almost everyone has to learn life lessons the hard very few are actually smart enough to listen to their elders and learn from other peoples mistakes the more you try to control someone the more they want to do the opposite of what you want for them people are human that way
