Question:

How can I kill fish when I go fishing?

I just asked a few minutes ago, but didnt' get an answer that I can stomach doing. My dad used to bonk them over the head and I tried that once and I got ill. So that is out. Another answer said to put a stick through there head... I can't do that either.

How can I kill the fish? I am ok with filleting them once they are dead and all that. I just can't kill them without feeling ill. Ideas that can help me out here?

  1. Those are actually the two most humane ways of doing it... you could just let it suffocate out in your cooler, or you could decapitate it, but if you can't bonk it on the head, I can't see you taking it's head off while it's alive... So we're down to suffocation... or maybe you could shoot it, but how much meat are you ruining? What's the right caliber for fish? Is your fishing spot a "safe shot"?

  2. Just put it in an ice chest full of ice.  They go into hypothermia and then gently "go to sleep".

  3. Hate to say this but hitting it on the head is the most humane way of doing it, maybe you should just fish catch and release, ask you're self do you REALLY need to keep the fish, i honestly don't think that there is any way you can do this without feeling ill, sorry to be so blunt.

  4. put it on ice that way it just feels like its falling asleep and it just doesnt know whats going on so thats probly the best way to do it so the fish isnt in pane or is scarred or you can take a knife and hit it right abouve its eyes and it will die instantly

  5. The most easy way to do this is just take the fish and drop them in cooler full ice and close the top. You go away come back in about 15 minutes and your fish will be ready to clean.  

  6. The easiest way for a person with a queasy stomach to kill a fish and not have to physically do it by hand would be to just put it in a large cooler filled with ice. Some fish die quickly in there, some take hours. Luckily the ice slows their metabolism, so they don't suffer as much as they would just setting them in water to smother. It's still not a fun way to die, but if you can't bonk them over the head, put a stick through their head, or cut it's head off with a cleaver, then you really don't have any other options than letting it smother and freeze to death. Unless you just get someone else to do it for you.

    So either try to get past it and cleave it's head off. (that is the quickest way), get someone else to do it, or put in a cooler with ice. You really don't have any other choices other than putting it back in the water.

    Just try to keep in mind that while it might be hard for you to do. Choosing a method that is quick will not only make it easier for the fish, but also make it less likely they will have so much adrenaline in their meat (which affects the taste) because they didn't suffer for hours. It gets easier to do with time, but I can definitely understand your position. That is why I normally get my husband to kill and clean them...lol.
