Question:

How can I know whether a comic is written in British English or in American English?

Is there any simple way to know it (for someone who, like me, doesn't speak English very well)? Any very common word, any little detail, I don't know... But something easy - I don't want to have to search if they say courgette or zucchini, hahaha... Something that let me know it by reading no more than two or tree pages.

Thanks a lot from Spain.

  1. they spell words differently. for example flavour in english is spelt flavor in american

  2. When there is a verb ending in a single "l" (to level, to snorkel, to travel), the English present participle will spell it with two letters "l" and the American with only one. (i.e. levelling/leveling, snorkelling/snorkeling, travelling/traveling). It's the same with the preterite (simple past) tense: levelled/leveled, snorkelled/snorkeled, travelled/traveled.

American words never seem to have the -our ending (flavour/flavor, favour/favor, humour/humor).

  3. you can check out who the publishers are, Marvel comics are an American company so theirs will be in American English.

    a list of publishers below

  4. Americans don't put the u into colour and the same goes for many words that follow that style. They also spell aluminium as aluminum (without the i before the second u).

  5. Colour is British, Color is American

There's also stuff like if they say Sidewalk or Grade 3 or ZipCode etc. They're All American, British say Path, Class 3/Year 3 and PostCode

  6. Mum - British, Mom - American

Trousers - British, Pants - American

Lift - British, Elevator - American

Policeman - British, Cop - American

That's all I can think of for now but I'm sure there's loads more!
