Question:

How can I label play clothes so the mark won't wash out?

My son is not getting the jist of what are good clothes and what are play clothes. He's 10 and old enough to put away his own laundry. He's supposed to put away his clean laundry and the play clothing is put in the dresser while good clothes are to be hung up. Unfortunately he keeps wearing his good clothes outside to play and when I ask him if what he's wearing is play clothes (when it's obviously not) he just says "I don't know" It's not that he's being lazy but he's not getting the point that clothing that's holey and stained is what you wear to rough house or play outside in. I've told him multiple times that if it's got holes, is faded, or stained it goes in the dresser but it's to no avail.

I'm trying to get some sort of system worked out either by marking the tags somehow or doing some sort of marking on the play clothes so that all he has to do is look for the mark. If it's not got a mark it get's hung up. In theory this will work, but I don't know how to go about marking the clothing. I know the old sharpies just blurred and faded after multiple washings so I didn't want to spend the time doing that if it won't last. The only clothing marking pens I've found say you have to heat set them with an iron which is a rediculous amount of work for this project. I need something that won't take all day and won't have to redone. Does anyone have any tips or ideas how to mark the clothing so he can put away his clothes without an ordeal and I don't have to worry about his nice stuff getting ruined. We don't have the money to be buying him a new wardrobe every month.

  1. Black permanent marker works the best!

  2. There are markers available for this.  They are laundry markers and they say so right on them.  You could also do iron on labels inside the clothes.

Good clothes have labels, play clothes don't.

  3. I agree with the permanent marker, X the tags on his play clothes or on the inside waist bands of jeans ect, I suggest using a black Sharpie, they are cheap and long lasting.

  4. Most tags are silk and/or white. I usually mark the tags with a permanent marker. It hasn't been washed out since.

  5. Well .I just go to the local book  &stationary shop & buy an Indelible -ink -marking pen.We write the name of the kid on the inside label -with special pen. This usually last quite a few washes.

Hence our clothing identification dilemma is solved.

  6. you  could get permanent marker and mark the tag on the play out

    clothes with it.

  7. Easy, I think in theory. Leave the tags in his "good" clothes, and cut them out of his play clothes. If it doesn't have a tag, he knows it is ok to play in them.

  8. Sharpie  makes a laundry marker called Rub-A-Dub.

The ink does not fade or wash out.

I have used it and the marking stays visible after manay many washings.

    Here's a link for it

  9. Eventually permanant markers will fade..over time..you could simply go buy some colored iron on patches for clothing and iron on little colored strips inside on the belt line or somewhere hidden..Heres an example all of these are iron on...
