How can I learn basic Tai Chi Chuan skills on my own without any classes?

I'm a fairly athletic person (I run long-distance) and would really love to begin Tai Chi. It has always interested me, and I really like how it seems to center your energy. Are there online videos or tutorials that can get me started? I don't plan on doing this seriously, just when I have the time.

  1. "I don't plan on doing this seriously, just when I have the time." This is the kind of thinking that encapulates Western thinking. Eastern thinking views tai-chi chuan not as a hobby that you do in your spare time. It is something you do for the rest of your life (if you're serious about it). It is a lifestyle. It is meant to be a part of your life because it is meant to improve your life on a continuing basis, not partly, nor haphazardly.

My personal opinion is that it is virtually impossible to learn from a book or video. But that doesn't mean you couldn't try.

    Good luck.

  2. You can't!

You might be able to learn MOVES, but SKILLS are quite a different story.

    Skills require teachers.

  3. find a store that has a fitness dvd collection and find a tai chi dvd that looks good.  Yes, it's true that having a real instructor is the best but I think you may already know that.  I found two dvd's at a ROSS store that were both with a guy named Sifu David Chang.  I looked up his school and the guy is for real- www.wushucentral.com.  I t didnt really matter. The dvd's are good and yes you will learn some of the many movements that are in tai chi.  No you will not become a master, but you can still reap the benefits of tai chi at this level but just understand your knowledge will be minimal.  i guess look for one that isnt some guy or girl "reinventing" tai chi and claiming to have found a "new" way of doing it.  Just look for something that sounds like it would be relaxing and fun to do.  THEN...when your interest is peaked and your dvd knowledge reaches its pinnacle- find a school.

  4. http://www.youtube.com/user/Moontagu

hes got alot of good videos

  5. Without the aid of an experienced teacher, much of the benefits will be lost.  You can learn the moves from a tape of book, but you need some one to correct common simple mistakes.  That will be the difference between 'doing tai chi' and 'doing tai chi-like movements.'

I have been enjoying tai chi for years and can't recommend it enough.

  6. You can learn the motions but there's more to TCC than just the postures.   Breathing, chi, fluidity.  etc.  It's harder than it looks.

You might try takin a few classes.  Some studios offer a free introductory class.

Try Williamccchen.com and look up an instructor in your area.  Also, you could google Tai Chi Chuan and/or look in the phone book.

It probably won't be that expensive.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy it.
