I need to learn more about how to manage a GSM network without having to visit the network elements mself. I imagine there would be some equipment added (inside the equipment room) in each location of the GSM sites, and this new equipment will send data through the MW links. Whats the terminal point? where will the data be collected and how?

  1. Network Management Systems (NMS) for GSM or any other basestation and cellular telephone networks are normally part of the equipment and it is also specified by ITU (search for TMN).  There are no additional equipment added.  The NMS channel is embedded inside of the protocol that transport the normal traffic (voice and data).  NMS systems are normally supplied as part of the whole equipment deal from manufacturers such as Qualcomm, Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola, Alcatel, etc.  There are NMS at the Network Layer and at the Element Layer.  The suggestion on learning how to manage the elements can be obtained from the equipment and software offerings of the listed manufacturers.  Also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Net...  The list provides NMS vendors beyond cellular equipment appications, i.e. storage, IT, etc.
