  1. Skating is a difficult sport to learn, even with a coach.  It's also really hard to break established "bad habits."  I would recommend taking some group lessons, and depending on your age and current activity level, you might want to consider checking with your doctor before starting anything strenuous.

    I think that most people can learn something by reading about it, researching common problems, and (in cases like this) videotaping yourself to spot the problems.  This could at least get you to a where you have a basic idea of how to do things.  BUT nothing can really replace having someone there who can tell you, real-time, what you're doing wrong and how to fix it.  

    As an example, I've been working on a certain jump for a couple of weeks, without much improvement.  I've read as much "how-to" info as I can find, but still...nothing.  In less than 5 minutes, my coach gave me a tip that made the jump feel much more comfortable.  And it's a tip that I'd never have found or thought of on my own.  Nothing can replace the experience a teacher brings to the "classroom."


  2. Though I've never skated before, I think it's best to do both.
