  1. The advice given above is for general English, not for regular verbs in the past as you asked.

There are three categories of sounds for the regular past endings:

    -ed= / t / (liked)

    -ed= / d /(earned)

      -ed= / Id / (wanted)

The problem with pronunciation arises because students are often taught (or observe) that the "-ed" ending adds another syllable to the word. And then they always add another syllable to the past tense of the verb. For example, "worked" is erroneously pronounced "work/id/" with two syllables, instead of just one, "work/t/."

A second syllable with the "-ed" ending is only necessary when the last sound (not the last letter) is a /t/ or /d/, for example,"decided," "needed," or "invited." The last sound  before the ending for the word "invited" is /t/. The last sound  before the ending for the words "decide" and "need" is /d/. These two sounds require that the added -ed ending be pronounced with an additional syllable.

Since you want free websites that help with pronunciation here are some.

To listen to the correct pronunciation click on the following website. Take no notice of the translator. Look at the pronunciation part and change the language from "French" to "English male" on the top right. Erase the "Je ne comprends pas" then type in the blank space the verb that you want to hear. Click on "say it". A male face will appear and give you the right pronunciation for any word you want to say correctly.

  2. Hello!

The rules about the pronunciation of the -ed forms have to do with which is the last sound of the infinitive form of the verb.

In English Phonetics we have two types of sounds: Voiced and Voiceless...

We have three possible ways of pronouncing the -ed form:

    /t/

    /d/

    and /id/

The important thing about the correct pronunciation has to do with the last SOUND of the word and not with the last letter as it is thought.

I enclose a useful link with a table... and a longer explination.

    Hope it helps!!!

  3. Buy Thompson and Martinett and Swann.  These are the two authorities which people have used for ages.  Concentrate on

    a) distinguishing between short and long vowels.  eg) Hispanics came to be called spicks because they could not distinguish between speak and spick.

    b) concentrate on voiced and aspirated consonanats at the end of words, because this determines how the subsequent 's' or 'd' is pronounced.

    c) listen out for intonation:

    d) pronounce the ends of words and dont leave out 's's.

    e) listen carefully to how the vowel modifiers are pronounced, in particular 'h', and 'r' and 'w'.
