I have a website and I want to use information from other sources.

Can I legally copy information from these sources as long as I give credit to those sources? Some sources will come from books and or magazines.

  1. I don't understand why people presume "giving credit" is a viable exchange for stealing content.

The copyright law is this (paraphrased:) redistribution of an original work, in whole or in part, without EXPRESS WRITTEN PERMISSION of the copyright holder is a violation of copyright law.

It doesn't matter if you give credit.

It doesn't matter if it's not for profit.

It doesn't matter if you mean well.

What matters, and how to copy information: Obtain permission from the original copyright holder, in writing. If it's for artistic or no-profit purposes, most of the time they will say OKAY, without charge, and tell you how they want you to present credits. If it's for profit, of course, they want to be paid for their work.

It's not really all that hard to do.
