  1. If you're a US citizen, you're allowed to stay in Spain for 90 days without a visa.

    After that, I'd suggest periodic trips to France so you can exit Spain and get a new stamp on your passport that's good for another 90 days.

    No guarantees that they'll let you back in, though, if you keep doing that.


  2. Illegally.

    If you rent a room in a shared apartment nobody is going to check your immigration status.  However, there are tons EU citizens flocking to Barcelona for work, so your chances of finding a job are slim.
