Question:

How can I live with a cat that never stops shedding?

She is about 8 and like an orange tiger stripe thing. She's a good cat but sheds nonstop. I try brushing her as much as I can stand the pain of her biting me. If I shave her (I wont) or give her a beer will that help? Seriously...what can I do?

  1. I had the same problem with my long haired orange cat, so one day I took him to the vet and the groomer there gave him a "lion cut". He hardly shed at all for the next 3 months or so. Now I get it done just 4 times a year and my home is pet hair free! And even though my cat hates the vet, getting shaved doesn't bother him at all- and I think he feels much happier and comfortable

  2. NOTHING.  Animals shed.  Sorry to have to share this disturbing information.

And, don't waste your money on "shed stop" or any of the other products.  They don't work.

And, at 8, you've got another 8 years of shedding.

You may see if your vet or a groomer has a suggestion but doubt it besides bathing every couple weeks and daily brushing.  And that could be tough on You.

    Good luck.

  3. Seriously, put her on foods without grains.  The good stuff.  She will still shed a little, but nothing like what you're used to.  If you feed...

DRY :: EVO, Wellness CORE, Nature's Variety Insinct, Serengeti, Merrick BG

WET :: EVO, Wellness (w/ yellow triangles), Nature's Variety Instinct, some of Merrick's flavors

You won't believe the difference.  Also, while more expensive, your cat will need to eat less since it doesn't have all the fillers.  So it won't cost as much as you think.

Brushing helps, but this is by far the best answer to your problem.

  4. Sorry, cats and dogs shed no matter what. Talk to a groomer or vet to see if you can reduce the fur she sheds.

  5. Sorry but cats are going to shed no matter what. I have a orange cat and he sheds nonstop too. Kinda even more than my longhair cat. Its so weird. I comb both of my cats.

  6. I brush my cat really good daily

  7. Shedding is normal, but it is usually increases drastically during the warm months. Brushing helps. A good quality diet may also help. Cats that are fed a meat-based food with real meat such as chicken as the first ingredient listed on the label, rather than grain such as corn, or meat by-products, usually have a healthier coat (and body)!

Stress also causes excess shedding in cats. Cats that are anxious, scared, or stressed will usually shed profusely!

If she is eating a low-quality food, try an upgrade. If something is stressing her, try to alleviate the problem.

  8. Check out the FURMINATOR brush - I promise it works wonders and will help soo much!

You can put at any Petco, etc.

  9. do you feed her good food?

seriously, i just switched from using Purina One to this stuff called Felidae that you have to buy at a pet store because i was told Purina is not good food and the cats will shed less if they eat better food.

it WORKED!  This new food is healthier so they are shedding less!

I have 3 cats and used to see chunks of fur all over the place and now I never do! (they still shed some of course but not in such large amounts).

Otherwise you need a good pet hand vacuum and need to vacuum often.

  10. Uh oh, who's going to say that you shouldn't have gotten a cat if you didn't want it to shed --- that's just what cats do, right? (sorry, a little bitter)

Giving your cat a bath can help, as can finding alternative brushes that will attract more hair, so you'd brush less often. The shedding should be seasonal and might slow down by winter. Excessive shedding usually isn't, but could be, a sign of malnutrition or illness. I wouldn't rush her to a vet, but if she develops bald spots or other problems, you might want to consider it.
