How can I locate past news events online?

from 1980's, any good websites would help.

Go to google, click on the news tab, enter the subject of interest, then on the right side of the screen you can find different time spans.

e. g. Soviet union 1980-1988

Edit: sorry apparently that wasn't free, maybe you can google 'News Archive' or something like that good luck anyway.
