How can I located the buried PVC pipes in my lawn sprinkler system.?

I am trying to upgrade my lawn sprinkler system and need to know the location of the buried PVC pipes- without random digging.

The simplest tool for that task is a prod a stiff rod you can simply push into the ground, irrigation systems are rarely more than six or eight inches deep and generally run straight as nature allows .  Good Luck

this is amazing but true. take a wire sprinkler marker flag and tear the plastic 'flag' off ,now balance the wire on your forefinger to locate the exact middle of the wire and bend it to 90 degree angle,hold it in your hand with with the bent part balanced on the second knuckle of your forefinger. now go to were your water reading meter is and aim the  wire that is protruding foreword parallel to the ground towards  your house. slowly move your hand back and forth about 2 feet in front of the water meter ,because we know that there is a pipe there .do not 'swing ' your hand but move it using the theory of a clock ,meaning 3 o'clock to 9 o'clock and back. with about 2 minuets of practice you will see that the wire stops moving right dead smack on top of the buried pipe,meaning that when you move the wire to the right of the pipe the wire will start to point to 10 o'clock  and to the left the wire will point to 2 o'clock ,and right above the pipe will be pointing at 12 o'clock.  ..old trick of the trade that you will show everyone after you master it .EVERYONE SHOULD TRY IT BEFORE THEY DOUBGHT IT ......p.s ..i never tried a nicely straightend out coathanger because i allways have flags ,but it may work also?

Straight line between the heads will indicate the buried lines.

There is a thing called a fox and hound that can trace them.but all you realy have to do is find a sprinkler head and dig around it.The pipe will point to the next head and so on.
