How can I log onto the internet on my laptop?

I've had my laptop (a compaq presario a931nr notebook pc) for 1 month and a half. I've used an internet line from a modem at my house (which it shares with an xbox live, i switch the line between the two) for a long time. One day the internet just would not come up. It says Internet Explorer can not display webpage. I've used the diagnose option several times but it won't repair. I tried to use the internet line at work (which i've done just as long and it used to work) and it still won't go to the internet. What's wrong?

Some Laptops can be susceptible to power surges even through your high speed internet service. If your internet still works with your XBox then there is a high possibility that you have had a power surge to your Laptop's Ethernet card and will no longer accept connections due to this. To test this, you could purchase a wireless router to see if it connects wirelessly. If it works now, then it would be a faulty ethernet port on your computer. If the internet still does not work, i would recommend you have a technician look at it for it may be something to do with your main board.

check your ethernet driver in device manager right click on my comp hit manage then device manager.  its under network adapter and see if its working properly then update the driver
