Question:

How can I login to my access point via my wired router?

I have a netgear wired modem/router connected to my main PC. One of the router ports is connected to a netgear wireless access point 15metres away to share my broadband connection with a couple of wireless laptops in another area. Now I can access the router configuration page from my PC no problem, but I can't access the AP configuration page. When I type the IP address of the AP into my browser I just get a 'cannot find server' message. What am I doing wrong? I'm a bit of a networking noob so please keep the answers simple. Any links to how to pages on the web would be great. Thanks

  1. Your out of range.. or you have low internet connection.. cant find server or page cannot be displayed means you have no connection at all. try to put AUTO CONFIGURATION ON THE IP ADDRESS.. and make sure that there are no signal interferance between your pc and that netgear. or you may increase its bandwidth by following its netgear bandwidth configuration.

  2. Instead of typing in the IP address, go to www.routerlogin.com, and log in with this:

    Username: admin

    Password: password

  3. Okay, I need some more information to really help here so if you could find the following bits of information for each device (PC, AP and Router) it would help diagnose the problem.

    IP Address

    Subnet Mask

    Default Gateway

For the PC this should be in your connection properties dialog in my network connections for your lan port.

For the router you should find them in its configuration page.

As for the access point can you use one of the wireless machines to look at it's configuration page.

Also can you run a few ping tests for me trying to ping from each machine the Router, the Access Point, and a computer on the other side of the network (ie one of the wireless machines from the wired PC, and the wired PC from one of the wireless machines) this should help me narrow down the problem.

To do a ping on windows go to Start>Run then in the box type the command:

    ping ip.address

    ie

    ping 192.168.0.1

All I am interested in is weather the ping is successful (gives a time, time is not important) or if it gives an error (Such as destination host unreachable, if you could tell me the error message).

I'll be out later so if I don't hear from you before then I'll check back in the morning (GMT+1).

Edit: In case you are wondering I ask for this information as I suspect that there is an addressing or subnetting conflict of some kind on the network which would cause these sorts of problems.
