How can I make a cover for this stair railing (Pictures)?

Please see the links below that show the staircase. I've already removed the decorative designs in between the balusters. Now I would like to add a wood cap or handrail cover to match my floors. It would have to fit over the existing wrought iron handrail. Can I buy something or would I have to make it?

  1. here is essentially what you are trying to end up with:

but the balusters are individual pieces. you could use oak stair rail and run it thru tablesaw with a dado set to the width of your existing top rail, and then s***w the iron rail into the bottom of the oak rail. a router could be used, but would be a lot more difficult.

    Hope that helps.

  2. If your just looking for a handrail: measure the top "u" channel. Go to a lumberyard and checkout hand rails. Most have a groove on the bottom to fit balustrades and fillers. The groove usually fits over the "u" channel. Drill holes in "u" channel and s***w on handrails from below.

  3. You will probably buy it at a regular wood yard, just take the measurements with you.

  4. i like the house. go to Menard's.

  5. I think you'd have to make it.  I've seen this done on a house with the same type of railings outside.  It looked okay for outside but I don't think it would work inside. What if you painted the existing rails to match the floor?  It would be easier.
