How can I make a denim bag look cool?

Someone recently purchased me a big denim shoulder bag. I'd like to use it for school, but it seems a little plain and I'm not a fan of the semi-dark denim. I'm really into vintage-looking things, but I don't have a lot of pins. How can I dress up the bag to suit my style?

You can try distressing it with sandpaper, and then adding some fabric patches to it. What I would do is take fabric from old clothes you dont like or wear and put them on your bag. You can also find pins at thrift stores too real cheap.
