paper mache. blow up big garbage bags and tie em off instead of baloons to hold shape

I would think a wood frame with chicken wire, then papered would be the way to go.  Kinda like the floats you see in parades.

Big block of styrofoam. Remove the parts that don't look like a clamshell.

That big would have to be light weight. Styrofoam is best but you might consider using a spray insulator.  They sell those at your local hardware store.  It looks like a can of spray and when you spray it, it foams up once dried it feels like styrofoam but much harder.  I'd begin by experimenting with the spray can and make an external shell using paper and wood.  Then fill the inside with the spray can insulator.
