How can I make a lanyard out of a shoelace?

I want to make a lanyard for my ID card using a shoelace 1/2'' width. I want the quality of it close to store bought and maybe listing some other parts I might need beside a shoelace would help.

Go to Michael's they have the metal clips and you can attach it to the shoelace ;)))
