How can I make a living by helping the environment?

I posted this in the careers section, and got two answers: sell scrap metal and make handicrafts with natural products...not sure how those would help...

Basically, my question is about environmental careers. Just graduated and this is really what im most passionate about, so I want to start a career in this field. How can I help protect the earth but still pay the bills?

  1. Any career area that you are interested in could theoretically have a corresponding "green" alternative.

Sales, marketing, technology, forestry, education, business, computers, science, biotechnology, etc etc etc.

So what did you study, what is your degree in, and what area are you looking to get into?

  2. try joining green peace its not much of a living but you get to travel a lot and things like travel, food and lodgings are covered by expenses

  3. With a strong enough background in the field, you can do environmental impact and similar studies. My happiest times are not when I stop a project cold, but when I can make a suggestion of a minor change that will save a locally-important ecosystem, while still allowing the project to continue.

  4. You can get a portfolio together and write articles for newspaper about the environment. You can also open your own business and be a consultant to companies or individuals. There really is a lot of need for people to guide them. I included a cute article that will help you make a few dollars here and there when you are bored this summer. Not a career, but some change to buy some things while you are helping the environment.

  5. You could work for the city in their recycling plant, or an Eco-friendly lawn care company. Or work with seniors, in my city we have people that go into seniors homes and help them make their houses more energy efficient.  Did you graduate from high school or university?  If you just graduated from high school, you might want to take some courses at your local college in environmental studies or go to university and take environmental science.

  6. Why not write to GreenPeace, Friends of the Earth, or the WWF. They may be able to give you some sound advice or may even have positions with them.
