Yes its the only way

if you want a photo/picture as your avatar

you need to make a yahoo 360 page upload the

jpg picture you want as your default then go

to yahoo mail>my profile>edit my info then click

use my 360 picture>preview then OK

You need a 360 page to have a personal photo of your self

But you do not need a 360 for a avatar.

This link will take you to the avatar home page

Click on preferences to get male or female body

Customize your avatar and save all changes

Go back to your answers profile

Click on 'edit my info'

And click on your avatar

Preview and click OK
