How can I make a pirate's map edging, so it looks burnt, without burning the house down?

Take it outside over a concrete surface..simply light the edges on one side at a time..and let it burn just slightly then blow it out..do another edge then another edge

Tear the edges and then dip the torn edges into strong dark coffee.  Or buy some rubber stamp ink at a craft store and rub the ink over the torn edges.  There are many colors of ink and one would do the trick I am sure.
