Well, Im trying to make a model rocket that has a liquid fueled Main Engine. The ME will be of LOX and LOH, with a combustion chamber. I also plan to make 2-6 Solid Rocket Boosters on the side. Any ideas????

  1. So your the flight director and engineer and you don't know this answer and also your looking on here for it when you should be abundantly aware of where to look? Seams to me like your lying.

  2. Working with liquid Oxygen or Hydrogen is extremely dangerous.  ( liquid fuels in general).

Liquid oxygen forms contact explosives with almost anything.

Accidents happen to the most experienced, for many unseen reasons.  A spark from ESD,  or any spills on your clothing, a piece of cardboard, or  a smudge of oil can lead to disaster.

( ESD Electro Static Discharge, "static electricity")

If the engine starts, and briefly runs out of fuel ( lean), the O2 will eat the engine metal instead fo the fuel, in a flash.

Therefore  more H2 is added than would normally be consumed, as H2 is light, and 02 is heavy.   This helps to prevent the engine from running lean, and destrying itself, but also provides more engine thrust by blowing out extra H2 at very high velocity.  The more mass you can push out the back provides more thrust.

The extreme cold poses its own set of problems with sensors, stuck valves, and ice accumulation.  Metals, and materials behave much differently at those temperatures.

Metals change resistivity, and become soft, or brittle.  Sensors, servos, and circuits may work intermittently, or not at all.

For safety, I suggest you become a member of Tripoli, and work out the aerodynamic, structural, technical, certification, and safety problems of these big rockets.   Stick with solid fuels, until you can get the experience, training and certification to work with liquid fuels.

May the force be with you . . .
