  1. Remember the water mill?

It lifts water to the top of the wheel.

You can build a pump driven by the river force.

If your question is about to install a pump in some place that has no electricity, remember that nowadays is very easy and somehow low cost to install solar converters that convert sun's rays into electricity, charge a battery that runs a small water pump electric motor...

Even a small pump motor, can pumps a gallon every 5 minutes or so, it may be 10 or more gallons per hour, almost 100 gallons per good sunny day.

  2. Hand pump (human powered) - hand lever pump, archimedies s***w, drive from bicycle type crank.

Animal powered pump - pony powered pumps were used in Scotland coal mines for over a hundred years.

    Old style farm type windmill.

Fuel engine powered pump: gas (natural gas or propane) or liquid (alcohol, gasoline, diesel) in internal combustion engine; coal or wood chips with steam engine.

Water powered pump - waterwheel or turbine.

Solar powered pump would best still be electrical, driven from solar cells charging batteries.

  3. Wind power.

  4. Build a small dam. Use down fall water power to turn a water pedal. The pedal links to a pump......here you are has a stable water pump that runs all the time. Wind power is not reliable. Next choice  is use animal or human power to pedal the pump, but they need rest and sleep. Therefore it requires 3 shifts to complete the non-stopping task.
