Question:

How can I make an overhead pergola from fluted columns and rebar?

The overhead would be made from arched rebar so I could grow clematis vines overhead. The fluted columns I've seen at Home Depot and hardware stores. Anyone done this before? Ideas or suggestions for me? The whole thing would be over a paver patio.

  1. In theory this should work provided you go a few steps beyond just standing some columns and sticking bent rebar into them.

The columns you have seen in HD are most likely aluminum and have no structural (load bearing) strength as they are meant to be a decorative cover only.

If you were to place these columns over a vertical 4x6 or 6x6 that was anchored into the ground and had just an inch or so extending above the top of the column, then I would believe what you are describing would be very possible.  You will also need a way to secure the top of the decorative column to the interior post to prevent any rattling in the wind.

This idea of yours really has some merit and loads of potential.  With just a bit of planning and on site adjustment I could see this working out just fine.
