How can I make easy art?

I'm the kind of person who's artistic and can do whatever when asked, my problems is IDEAS! For my new home I'd like to buy some canvas and create some abstract art and have some kind of contemporary decoration. still, I'd like some ideas (without spendind a lot of money) and ideas about colors.

Since the kitchen colors are gray and black I was thinking to make 3 canvas for the dining room and paint a fork, a spoon and a knife, in a very simple way, adding some red. Any other suggestions?

Red would go nicely with black and grey. So would many other colors (green, blue, violet) I'm picturing a vibrant sage green. The silverware option could be fun. Maybe make them oversized and vary the direction in which the image appears on the canvas. Maybe just the prongs of the fork or the serrated edge of the knife. Or you could paint some kind of graphic, or print and have the silverware just be a silhouette in front of that graphic. (flowers or stripes maybe) What you really might want to to before choosing your paint colors is decide on your flatware, so that you can coordinate.
