You can try the following:

- Open Messenger

- Click the Messenger Menu

- Choose Privacy Options

- Unselect allow plug-ins to set clickable Status Messages

- Then, click the OK button

If that doesn't work, then it may not be a setting that you can get rid of besides downgrading to an older version of Messenger (older than version 8.1). But that probably would also mean, your contacts would have to do the same.
