Question:

How can I make money in Northern Ireland during my study abroad?

I'm studying abroad in Belfast next fall, and because i'm only going to be in the country for 3 months, I can't get a work permit. I have A TON of experience in child care (babysitting, working at a summer camp for 5 years +, majoring in child psychology and youth studies, etc).

Are there cash-paying nanny or babysitter jobs available? How do I find one? Or are there restaurants/bars/pubs that hire without permits?? Thanks in advance for any information :)

  1. Check out our web site at  www.shecana.ca

  2. try the pubs or restaurants. american youngsters are usually taken on because they are quaint to coin a pun.You have no chance in the child care sector as the people here are quite wary about who looks after their kids and being a foreigner you would be at the bottom of their list for a childminder no offence intended.

  3. I know quite of few people that work at Pubs all around the world.

  4. Nanny and babysitting wont pay very good if you haven't got a work permit but you could put a free or cheap advert in all the local supermarkets soon as you arrive. Where I live in NE England the adverts are free but you will need to ask at the customer information desk for a card to write your details on and don't forget to put your mobile number on it so people can call if they require  your services. As for the other jobs you mentioned then the best places wont employ you cos it against the law but you could always call in the premises and ask for the manager as there are a few who would employ you as cheap labour. after all the illegal immigrants seem to manage. So long as you are not expecting a great wage I can not see it being to hard.  And keep your eye on the conversion rate. Lately the dollar has been worth 2GBP or even slightly more. Good luck I do hope that you manage to make a little money as it is not very pleasant to manage without a least a little bit of pocket money.

  5. Depends what country you are coming from, and what your visa restrictions are.

I think you are allowed to work 16 hours a week on your student visa (check with the home office to be certain- my friends in England are allowed to work a few hours a week legally). It might be hard to get a job working with children without a police check and a visa, but you might luck out. There is an abundance of cheap labour from other EU countries (ex.Eastern Europe) all over the UK. There are also stiff penalties for employees caught hiring people without visas. I would recommend checking how many hours you are allowed to work first. Then, try looking in the newspaper in Belfast. You might luck out getting a position without anyone checking!!

    Good luck!
