How can I make my HS Basketball team?

Last year our boys freshman team sucked. This year im a sophmore and I was thinking it would be a little easier to make it because some guys will be making the jump to varsity. Let me start off by saying this...I really have no clue on what position I play. Dont get me wrong I have played basketball before and understand it but I just don't know what position I'll play. As a 10th grader I'm at least about between 5'10-5'11. The one thing I lack most I would say is muscle. People ask me a lot of the time can I dunk. Actually no I can't yet. Most guys on the team are either my size or bigger than me that play forward and above. I was thinking I may be able to play SG. People tell me I'm good a defense but last year my shooting was pretty bad. But over the summer I worked on it and I got better at it. My dribbling skills are okay but not like crazy. So what do you have to do in order to really really get the coaches attention?

  1. haha wow. you are in the exact situation that im in. i played for my team last year (freshman) and i just barely made the team. im 6'1 and constantly asked why i cant dunk yet. what im doing to prepare is to weightlift about 2-3 times a week, and going jogging everyday. also, just keep practicing, see if your coach is assiging any practices/open gyms soon. haha and if you can think of anyothers, you should email me. lol

  2. you have to believe in yourself and be very positive and practice everyday until you are the best of the best

  3. if you want to get into the team i think running & staying in shape is the #1 thing than all the basketball techniques go 2nd

  4. Be confident and if the coach is a favoritist then you should make it. Your attitude will determine how well you do out there, crush those chumps and do what comes natural. I'm a b-ball player too, I practice daily atleast 3 hours a day, do dribbling drills with chairs and stuff like that, and clean up my shot( remember 'beef' and shoot when you're within the arc try shooting with one hand, the left hand is for guidence) watch alot of games, mimic your favorite players, immitation and reppition. Practice shooting on everypart of the court, starting inwards and slowly progressing backwards as you make more and more shots. And most of all confidence in yourself and your shot. In the end don't over anylize anything, it should all come naturally. Your shot, your dribble, you as a great basketball player. If you do all that the only way they'll decline you is if their crazy. Be confident in everything you do actually, go to the gym, meet people, play with kids that are better than you, that's the only way you'll get better. If you play with chumps you won't get any better believe me.

  5. well actually you can be a forward because forward just play defense and you can set picks and screens for other players to get open.I'm 6 feet 3 and i play forward because i am good at defense and my post moves are excellent. The number one thing coaches like to see is hustle. When the ball is loose, the coach likes to see players running and diving for the ball.

  6. if you get cut its alright. god and your parents will still love you. and if you get picked on just walk away.

  7. get good dumbass what kind of question is that you tryout and if you suck then you dont make it

  8. Show the coach that your really good and prove it

to him. Work on your dribbles the most, everyone needs

a good ball handler. try dribbling two balls at a time

then slowly work your way to running with them then

again slowly work your way to stoping a running and

over and over again. (and dont look at the ball)

If you wanna be better a shooting practice shooting a

little inside the 3 point line then work your way further out.

and shot at every angle of the court especially the side.

Its okay if you dont get it the first time just keep going. I

play ball too and im only 13 but im trying to make it to varsity

some how. good luck & keep practicing.

  9. You could possibly play the 3 or 2 if you shooting has improved that much. You gotta understand that if you have a good coach and a good team, when the game is tight your team is able to spread out the D to get you a good shot, you HAVE to make it and from EVERYWHERE outside the paint, guarded or not, you MUST make it. That is the MAIN goal of any 2 guard. So your veins must be like ICE. If you have that kind of confidence and your shooting has improved that much, then try for that position.

The best part about being a small forward is that you are sort of a "jack of all trades". You do whatever is needed of you the most. Playing D, shooting outside or inside the paint, posting up, setting picks, etc. Think of people like Lebron James, Michael Jordan and Larry Bird, my personal favorite. You MUST be athletic as heck. You must be able to make instant 15-17 footers, but maybe not 3's all that much. You must be able to play defense like crazy. You must be able to take quick advantage of mismatches, etc.

So, to make a long story short, you should choose, are you more of a pure shooter with blood like ICE or are you more of an athletic shooter/defender who can occasionally push around the big boys but can definitely outrun them! Good luck. I am sure you will find a position. Just be sure to stand out as much as possible on the tryout day.

  10. alright. first you need to be good. like really, really good. to stand out. or else your gona be benched. Im 5'10 (cannot dunk) yet im on varisty since my freshman year, im a sophommore at the moment.

You got to have crazy defense, do not anyone go through you. Second you got to have crazy handles, while dribbling with your head up. (DO NOT LOOK AT THE BALL) stand out, hustle, NEVER quit. dont talk back to the coach. Do that become better and you will even make varsity like me, then again i already got a  college scholarship. from basketball
