  1. You don't have control over how much memory a program is using.  So...  to make the computer use less RAM, run fewer programs.

  2. You want your computer to use the RAM it has.

Is some program using more RAM than it should?

*edit* Sometimes buggy software won't manage RAM correctly. For instance, Firefox 2 had lots of problems in this regard, if you left it running. Restarting it would fix the problem. For what it's worth, FF3 has fixed these problems.

  3. If you wish to conserve RAM use, you're going to want to run fewer programs.

RAM is short for Random Access Memory. It allows the computer to switch between windows more rapidly than it would if your computer didn't have RAM and it had to use the slower alternative. Whenever you open a new program or window, the previous one has to be stored somewhere until you close it, so it's stored in RAM. The computer thinks you'll want to view it again quickly, so this is why it stores it here until you close it.

The easiest way to conserve RAM therefore is by having less windows and programs open. As software gets larger and larger, it'll demand more and more RAM. Soon, you'll only be able to have one window/program open and it might even run slow. My suggestion would be to keep your RAM upgraded. The average computer these days carries about 1 GB of RAM.

To find out if you can upgrade your computer's RAM, just do a quick [Yahoo/Google] search with your computer brand and type.

(Note: If you're looking for a more advanced method of conserving RAM, you might try searching "How do I use less RAM?"
