I dont know if the mower is shaft driven (proably not). It is a new craftsman ys4500. it has a 21hp b&s engine, and a 46 inch deck. i got it lke 2 weeks ago. and I was wondering if there is a way to increase the ground speed of it. i heard that if you put a smaller pulley on the engine and a bigger one on the wheels. it will be faster. is this true? if not how do you make it faster. any ideas?

  1. You have it backwards, if you put a smaller pulley on the engine and a larger pulley on the driven axle, then you will decrease top speed.  Try doing just the opposite, a larger pulley on the engine and a smaller one on the driven shaft.  You may lose some acceleration by doing that, but with a 21 HP engine, you should have more than enough to up the speed.

good luck,  OH, PS.  Don't go overboard when you change pulleys,  A little difference may make a big difference in speed and power.

  2. Put a Big pulley on it with big wheels. Less torque more speed!!!

  3. you got it backwards

Bigger pulley (or sheave)on the engine

Smaller pulley on the drivetrain and it will go faster

BUT, the faster your ground speed the less power you will have to climb slopes and cut taller grass!!

  4. don't ruin the warranty. if there is a problem regaurding the speed then maybe there already is a solution.check with local shops or directly with the company.

  5. that will work but go easy ... You dont want to end up chasing it
