  1. You cannot ..... put cups, plates and servers on thick table mats

  2. put a few coats of polyurethane on it. Nice hard finish. With any table top use a coaster also. :)

  3. Multiple coats of varnish........

  4. There is no polish that will protect the surface the way you want. In future instead of putting hot coffee cups directly on the table top use coasters.

If you want to give yourself a lot of work you could totally sand the whole top until there is no polish or old clear coat left.  Buy a two part epoxy floor clear coating and follow the instructions as if you were coating a floor. This will give you a super hard surface less inclined to suffer damage from hot coffee and other spills. Unfortunately pine table tops are easily damaged by hot objects. Never put hot pans on the table top.

  5. Get a piece of glass cut to fit the table top. You can see the finish and resist any damage from spills or heat.

  6. I may be wrong, but my understanding is that it's the polish or varnish that marks with the heat, not the wood. removing the finish removes the stain. If you find this is the case when you sand the mark out, I'd try to find a heat resistant finish, if this isn't the case ignore me coz i'm just an idiot. hope you get it sorted.

  7. Any good varnish or polyurethane will stand up to the heat of a cup of coffee.  Don't set a pan right off the stove on it, but a coffee cup will not throw that much heat.  Good luck.
