How can I make my unfriendly cat enjoy human affection?

My 1 year old cat, Dinky absolutely hates being held and pet. She just really doesn't enjoy human affection. How can I help her to understand that we only want to be niice to her? Is tere anything I can do to make her more friendly?

From what I've read, cats that like affection tended to have been "handled" a lot as kittens.  Aloof cats tended not to have been handled as much.  

That said, cats do have personalities of their own.  I don't think that you can change this personality.

Most cats are aloof. If you want devotion and companionship, get a dog.

my cat is bi-polor too

she doesnt like to be pet,held, ANYTHING

sometimes when shes in the mood she'lk let you pet her but in the blink of an eye she'll start biting you

at this point we dont even try-we let her come to us for affection
