  1. don't try too hard but don't try so little. It also depends on your voice range, how high can you go and how low. drink lots of water!!! water helps your throat witch helps your voice to sound better.

  2. Livi D,

Hey there. I am not a professional singer by any means, but I do it a lot in my free time and have had a few formal lessons. Here are a few tips to help your singing:

    - Always warm up before singing, whether it is practice or an actual performance. A great way to do this is to stand up straight with an even stance. Breathe deep and relax all of your muscles and joints. Then, start at a very low pitch and slowly roll it up to a super high pitch, all the time keeping your mouth very open and relaxed. It will sound silly, but it really helps loosen things up. Imagine the sound resonating through every bone, and hollow area in your body. Do this for about 5 minutes. Have water nearby too!

    - Always support your voice with your stomach muscles. Picture your abs pushing out the note. Slouching and bad posture can have an incredibly detrimental effect on your singing. Keep your mouth open and try to imagine that you are singing to a crowd that is very far away. Don't scream your head off, but really try to project the sound. Be confident.

    - Also, if you have the ability to, record yourself! This can be a very valuable tool. Sometimes it is hard to tell whether or not we are singing in the correct pitch, rhythm, or with the right quality while we are doing it. This will let you go back and study your singing.

By the way, what musical are you doing? Good luck with your solo! I hope this helps!

  3. I don't condone it, but sometimes, before I sing for my friends, or on Karaoke, I'll have a cigarette beforehand. I think mostly, that it just helps to calm my nerves. So essentially I'm saying to apply it creatively to your own knowledge of yourself. If you know of something that calms you down and makes you relaxed, do that beforehand. For some people it's a glass of something they enjoy, for others it's a certain song they enjoy listening to... as long as you're not doing anything to dry out your mouth before you go on stage to sing, if it relaxes you, go for it! ^^

    ***EDIT***

I just noticed my answer didn't have an explanation to it. Some people actually do better when they're not trying, or not thinking about doing better, and they don't think about it as much if they're relaxed.
