If we end up going with a larger wedding, I don't want it to come off as one of those traditional, by-the-book sort of shindigs. I know with a smaller guest list many aspects of the day, venue for example, are more flexible. Since though we may be having a larger wedding though (around 80-100 guests), what sort of things sould we consider to make our day a little unique and more personal?

  1. The food you serve at your reception is a great way to set your event apart from the rest. My fiance and I are having our favorite restaurant cater our reception. It's a rib joint, so i'm sure most of our relatives who are used to the typical midwestern Polish buffet (ewwwwww!) will be shocked and appalled. lol But the food's so good, they'll get over it. We're also having a gourmet coffee and cocoa bar. My fiance loves cocoa, so this is another way we're tying in the things we love. It will have hot milk, tea, coffe and all the mix-ins like cocoa mix, marshmallows, chocolate chips, whipped cream, etc. Plus we're giving everyone rock candy coffee stirrers and chocolate coated spoons (to stir into hot milk for cocoa) as favors.

Since my fiance's family is Polish (and his dad freaked when i told him we weren't having a Polish buffet), we're also having a polka band play at the cocktail hour.

My hobbies are mostly crafts, so I'm making a lot of the decor myself.

Also, we decided to have a small, intimate wedding (about 70 guests- just parents, grandparents, siblings, and aunts and uncles. We have humongous families. lol), and a much bigger reception (about 225). Our ceremony is goung to be at a historic mansion/museum in our hometown, so we're going with "vintage" as the theme for the attire. No specific era though. i want it to look like everything has been handed down from different times.

Don't be afraid of doing something for your wedding that is "weird" or that people will think it's lame. You want it to be a reflection of you and your fiance. I know a couple who are HUGE Chicago Cubs fans, and when they made their entrance into the reception, the groom put on his ball cap and a catcher's mitt and the bride threw out the "first pitch". Everyone thought it was awesome! If you guys love fishing, put bamboo fishing poles in tall glass vases and hang small pomanders from them on fishing line for centerpieces. If you love books, use old books (damaged ones from yardsales or thrift stores) and photocopies of pages from old love stories and poetry in your decor. If you're movie buffs, play music from your favorite movie soundtracks. If you're video game fanatics, rent a huge screen TV and bring the Wii for some tournament action. Anything you do that makes people think "That's so THEM". Have fun!

  2. What are you and you fiance's hobbies? Do you like old world? Do you share a love for something unique? Incorporate that stuff into your day. Opt for a wedding dress in a different color. Wear pants...whatever you like. It is your day!

  3. Anything that you do will make it unique for you. I am going to a wedding where she wanted everything different than from a traditional wedding but its started costing her too much.

  4. Hello,,80 - 100 ? that ain't very big, that's a weekend cook out, maybe if you plan on having a big party each year, every weekend after your wedding day, you'll be able to relive some of the special moments, and that'll give you a chance to have fun at least once a year.

  5. My wife and I put throw a   way cameras on each table at the reception. We ended up with some really fun candid shots a photographer never would have caught.. We also had a professional photographer.. Good luck in your new life together. Be flexible in all things.

  6. Rock the Reception from TLC!

  7. Girl what you need is a wedding planner to help plan your unique and special event.  Someone who can ask you and your fiancee a bunch of questions and can come up with the perfect theme.  I know of a good wedding planner her email address is thepartyplanningdivany@yahoo.com, email her for a free consultation.

  8. I almost did it and I should of was a photo booth. Its fun and guests will love it and you and your husband will have a lot of funny and memorable pictures from all  your guests.

My personal opinion if you put alot of thaught into your wedding like custom pick your dinner music to every lille detail Your wedding will be your own. One other idea is having a great departure like a hot air ballon and you can toss your bouquet and thats great.

  9. I'm getting married in Oct. w/ 150 people.  I am doing a few things - I am doing "Did You Know" cards with statements about me and the groom's lives that our guests probably don't know.  Everything from - Did you know the groom was raised in Africa for ten years?  to - Did you know the bride broke both of her wrists twice by the time she was three?

Two of these cards will sit on each table in a small picture stand, on hard, nice paper that I printed ourselves.  This is a great conversation piece!

Also - I am blowing up pictures of our childhood to 5x7 and hanging them on a 6 ft candleholder stand (minus the candles add the pics).  Finally, we are doing a video of pics to music before the ceremony.  And our favors have personalized tags on them that say thank you for joining our wedding, yada yada, yada, and we will sign them personally.  Just a few ideas if you are on a low budget :)
