  1. my uncle grows hybrid roses and saves all the petals for me.

    It takes tons and tons of petals to make rose oil.  But less for potpourri.

    This is what I do with my petals:

       8 cups dried petals

        * Scented geranium leaves and petals

        * Rosemary and lavender, small amounts

        * Cinnamon sticks

        * Cloves

        * 1 tbsp orris root powder------I buy mine at the herb store.

        * Rose essential oil-------Hobby Lobby

        * Lavender essential oil------Hobby Lobby

    Steps:

       1. Mix the dry ingredients together, apart from the orris root powder.

       2. Place into an airtight container and allow to infuse for a week.

       3. Add the orris root powder and a few drops (three to five) of each essential oil and mix through.

       4. Return to the airtight container and store for 6 weeks. Turn regularly to ensure that the scent is evenly distributed. If you can, daily stirring is best - set yourself a computer break reminder!

       5. Use. Once the 6 weeks have passed and you are happy with the scent, put the potpourri into a container that will allow the release of the scent into a room. Turn about once a week to refresh the scent and refresh every few mos. with more drops of rose oil or lavender oil.

    A cheaper way, skip the oil of rose and oil of lavender and use perfume.  The oils run about 10 to 12 bucks for 2 tiny bottles.
